This morning we met in the lobby with the members of the group (three of us including myself) and our Iranian guide/escort to discuss ins and outs about the tour, answer questions about Iran, etc. Before long, we were loaded into a van and taken to our first sightseeing destination: Golestan Palace. The palace is actually a complex of many palaces. It also houses the Versailles-inspired mirror-encrusted Marble Throne Hall which was used for the coronation of the last Shah. It was amazing the amount of sparkle they can get out of those mirror pieces! We visited several of the palace structures, some housing old photographs, some with old painting and artwork.
We then made our way to a nearby restaurant for lunch, which was delicious! After lunch, we visited the National Jewels Museum, which has a huge amount of crown jewels that were used by the Qajar and Pahlavid royalty and court members. I loved the diadems with their huge sapphires, emeralds, rubies and diamonds. We also got to see the largest pink diamond in the world. It was a very impressive collection of some huge gemstones!!!!
We then made our way back to the hotel where we had a little free time before dinner. I actually ended up sleeping through dinner I was so tired... Tomorrow is another day of exploring Tehran!!!
