When last I wrote, I was about to head to the group welcome meeting. At the meeting, I met the rest of the group minus one of our members who hadn't arrived yet. So on this tour we have Rob and Tim, both from Canada; Gary from San Francisco (who I traveled to China with last year), Alex from Manhattan, and from Long Island. Seems to be a great group. I certainly have laughed a ton, as Gary and I have similar senses of humor and keep each other amused.
After our meeting we headed to dinner, where I had a bite of whale meat for the first time. It wasn't as good as I was expecting. After dinner we went out for a few drinks and then headed back to the hotel since we were getting an early start the next morning.
After we checked out of our hotel, we began the morning with a tour of Reykjavik, which isn't a very large town. Actually, Iceland only has a population of 300,000 for the entire country, so nothing here feels crowded, that's for sure... We visited the downtown area, parliament, a few churches, and "the pearl" which was a huge revolving restaurant at the top of a hill which has nice views of the city.
We then drove out of town a bit to the place where the people of Iceland used to make important decisions and hold their parliament in ancient times. It is at the location where the North American tectonic plate and the Euro-Asian tectonic plate are moving away from one another, causing a rift. It was a very interesting place, both from a historical and a geological standpoint. It also is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
We then made our way to the Golden Waterfall and hiked all around. This was a gorgeous waterfall and the mist of the water spraying up from the torrent created a gorgeous rainbow!
After the waterfall, we had lunch and then went to see a geyser go off. I have never seen one before, so it really was a delight for me.
We then visited a second waterfall on the way to our guest house for the night. We stayed in charming little chalet-style cabins and had amazing views of the volcano that erupted in 2010 and caused all the air traffic delays.
We had a lovely dinner and then hung out together laughing until the wee hours of the morning!
