Iceland: Day 7 - Rainy Reykjavik Pride

After dinner last night, we headed to the first Reykjavik gay pride event that was held at a local bar. There were far more people than I expected, most were tourists though, interestingly enough. We danced into the wee hours of the morning before heading back to the hotel to sleep.

We were able to sleep in this morning and I only got up and moving in time for lunch. We went to a local restaurant and then made our way to where the gay pride parade was held. I am always touched by pride events in Europe, because they are such family events. Everywhere you looked, there were parents with their small children, the kids carrying rainbow umbrellas and flags... It was raining off and on, and heavily at times, but the turnout was incredible: thousands of people lined the streets and weathered the horrible weather to watch and enjoy the parade. My favorite (most touching) float was one that was completely empty and said "Reserved for those of us who are oppressed and unable to celebrate their pride." I did tear up a little bit...

We had the afternoon free and Alex, Gary and I had some coffee and tea to warn up, and then walked around town to do a bit of shopping. We eventually made it back to the hotel to have a little down time before dinner and tonight's pride event!
